A tributory of the Rio Laja gone dry.

Funding

US Fish and Wildlife Service

The first international funding to protect the Laja watershed began in 1993 with a grant of $18,000 to the Fundacion Ecologica de Guanajuato from the US Fish and Wildlife Service for an avian survey in the forest of Santa Rosa. The survey proved the forest is of vital importance to the survival of migratory birds.

North American Fish and Wildlife Service Grants

US National Fish andWildlife Foundation

In 1995 a grant of $57,000 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in Washington, D. C. provided for training in river restoration techniques.

US Forest Service

Subsequently the US Forest Service gave grants of $10,000 and $24,000. These grants were awarded to the Fundacion Ecologica de Guanajuato the Sociedad Audubon de Mexico and CASA for restoration work in Santa Rosa. Save the Laja provided CASA with scientific information and introduction to US Forest Service so that CASA could get the grant of $24,000 to continue work in Santa Rosa.

US Forest Service Southwest Regional Office

North American Wetlands Conservation Council

The North American Wetlands Conservation Council awarded a grant of $228,000 for work in 36 communities in this watershed which began in January, 2001.

State of Guanajuato

The State of Guanajuato has awarded a grant of $40,000 for educational videos and teaching demonstrations.

Fund-Raisers

Galas, luncheons and other events and private donations ranging from $25- $5,000 have enabled us to raise roughly $35,000 locally. Private support is essential as many foundations insist that we raise matching funds.

Additional Major Expenditures

Save the Laja donated $10,000 of money raised at Gala to CASA for continuing restoration work.

Transportation was provided for two interns (one from Cornell in August 2000, one from University of New Mexico in January 2001).

Save the Laja funded a small project with FAI, including providing sand and gravel operators.

Costs of GIS computer equipment to support continuing GIS data collection and analysis.
