Bird Migration

The Rio Laja was once the primary route for migratory birds, as shown on the map of old migration routes. It carried life to other regions in the United States and Canada and to our neighbors to the South.

The first significant wetland south of the U.S.-Mexican border, it is still a high priority area for transiting birds. However, with the watershed endangered, several species of birds are threatened. The map of current migration routes illustrates how changes in the environment have already impacted migration.

According to experts from the U.S. Forest Service, the ecology of the entire continent of North America depends upon the healthy survival of this area,
