Economic and social importanceThere is a human face to the problems of the Rio Laja WatershedThe Laja basin covers almost half the State of Guanajuato, which has one of the highest rates of outward migration of men per capita in Mexico. The degraded environment is partly to blame. Women and children in some villages spend hours hauling water. Illness is common. The region has one of the worst infant mortality rates in Mexico, largely due to waterborne diseases, or worse, lack of any water at all making sanitation impossible.
